The discussion around Ukraine national history is a highly politicized debate, in which not only historians and political scientists participate, but politicians of the highest ranks. When Vladimir Putin declared on 21 February 2022 that “Ukraine was entirely created by Russia”, he refers to the national policies of the Bolsheviks in 1917/1918, who created the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Of course, he fails to mention many other events of that turbulent time. Our guest Hanna Perekhoda, PhD student in political science at the University of Lausanne, will take a closer look at the formation of socialist Ukraine, and the role the highly politicized Donbas(s) region played in these debates.
